Loosening lever risk: SRAM issues recall on 12-speed shifter clamp bolts

SRAM has issued a mass safety recall on clamp bolts for all 12-speed eTap AXS shifters produced before 1st July 2023 that were sold as aftermarket sets. This includes shifters from across the SRAM hierarchy, from Red all the way down to Apex STI levers.

SRAM says the clamp bolts may not adequately tighten, even when correctly installed, which could cause the shifters to slip or rotate while riding and could lead to potential accidents.

This comes not long after the well-publicised recall of Shimano Hollowtech cranksets.

Are my shifters affected?

Only some of SRAM’s shifters are affected, so we’ve broken it down into a checklist. Your shifters will only be included in the recall if they meet all of the following criteria:

  • eTap AXS electronic shifters
  • Produced prior to 1st July 2023
  • Sold as an aftermarket set (ie, shifters that were not installed by a dealer onto a new bike)

If your shifters came as part of the standard build, then they won’t be affected by the recall.

How do I check if my shifters are faulty?

The clamp bolt needs to be tightened to 6Nm with a 5mm allen key. Once tightened, apply light pressure to the shifter. If it slips or rotates, stop using the bike and contact your SRAM dealer. SRAM says if customers are unsure how to or do not wish to perform the checks themselves, they can take their bike to a SRAM dealer and get the bolt checked, and replaced if necessary, free of charge.

SRAM has included a video on how to check the clamp bolt, shown here:

The full recall notice is available at SRAM.com (opens pdf).
