Paris-Nice 2024: Route, how to watch, start list and everything you need to know

Paris-Nice, nicknamed the Race to the Sun, is one of the biggest one-week stage races on the men’s WorldTour calendar with Tour de France hopefuls using it to test early season shape or just to get into the swing of things once more. The 2024 edition returns from 3rd-10th March.

Last year’s race was won by Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 53 seconds ahead of David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) and 1:39 over Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike). Stage 6 was cancelled due to high wind speeds in the area as Pogačar dominated in the final two mountainous stages.

Pogačar won’t be back to defend his title as he’ll be racing in Strade Bianche. Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) will be on the start line with UAE Team Emirates still bringing the firepower in João Almeida, Finn Fisher-Black, Brandon McNulty and Jay Vine.

Paris-Nice 2024: The route

Beginning in Yvelines once again, the race will take riders down central France and towards the southeast to finish in Nice, also where the 2024 Tour de France will host its final stage individual time-trial in the summer.

Paris-Nice 2024: Stage-by-stage preview

Stage 1, Sunday 3rd March: Les Mureaux – Les Mureaux, 157.7km

The opening stage of the 2024 Paris-Nice is a day littered with short Category 3 climbs, the last one coming 12km before the finish.

Stage 2, Monday 4th March: Thoiry – Montargis, 179km

It’s a flatter day for Stage 2, a sprinter’s playground for Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Dstny), Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) or powerhouse Mads Pederson (Lidl-Trek).

Stage 3, Tuesday 5th March: Auxerre – Auxerre, 26.9km

There should be more team time-trials. Stage 3 is a slightly bumpy 26.9km ride around Auxerre. Last year’s TTT was won by Visma-Lease a Bike by one second ahead of EF Education-EasyPost.

Stage 4, Wednesday 6th March: Chalon-sur-Saône – Mont Brouilly, 183km.

The Category 2 climbs rear their heads (or summits?) as the gradients begin to notch upwards. There’s six Cat 2 climbs in total including the summit finish on Mont Brouilly (3km, 7.7%). The Category 1 Col du Fût d’Avenas (5.1km, 7.3%) comes just after the only sprint point of the day.

Stage 5, Thursday 7th March: Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut – Sisteron, 193.5km

Another hilly day in the saddle. Stage 5 sees four Category 3 climbs on the road to Sisteron, the longest of the Col de Peyruergue (5.4km, 4.9%) coming 118km into the 193.5km day.

Stage 6, Friday 8th March: Sisteron – La Colle-sur-Loup, 198.2km

Picking up where yesterday’s stage left off in Sisteron, Stage 6 passes over five categorised climbs before a downhill finish towards La Colle-sur-Loup, a slight incline then hitting in the final kilometre before the finish line.

Stage 7, Saturday 9th March: Nice – Auron, 173km

The hills turn to mountains. The peloton immediately face the Category 2 Côte de Gattières (4.5km, 4.8%) just 10km into the day, which culminates with a summit finish at the Category 1 Auron (7.3km, 7.2%).

Stage 8, Sunday 10th March: Nice – Nice, 109.5km.

The final stage of Paris-Nice is a short but not sweet ride around Nice. A trio of Category 2 climbs precede two Category 1 behemoths that sandwich the short side of the Col d’Èze (which will feature in the Tour de France TT), with parts of the final climb of the Col des Quatre Chemins reaching 16% gradients.

Paris-Nice 2024 will be available to watch in the UK on Discovery+ for £6.99 per month with the basic package, which includes cycling and all other Eurosport programmes. It will also be shown on the TV channel Eurosport 2 in the UK.

If it’s not being shown in your country, you may be able to watch coverage using a VPN – Virtual Private Network – which allows users to mask their IP address and watch geo-blocked content, provided they don’t need to pay for a subscription. This is also helpful for watching paid-for coverage while travelling abroad in countries without access.

One such example is ExpressVPN, which is very well reviewed, helps users to find way to watch cycling without having to pay for broadcasters services, and costs £5.36 per month, with three months free. Other options include NordVPNSurfshark and Kapersky.
