GP Québec and Montréal 2024: Canada one-day race routes, start lists and how to watch

Grand Tour season is over and the autumn Classics are kicking into gear, with the two Canadian one-day races, GP Québec and Montréal, taking place on 13th and 15th September 2024 resepectively.

The races take place on tough city circuits with the opener in Québec City more suited to sprinters and puncheurs and the Montréal race suiting climbers. Montréal will host the 2026 World Championships, so the course may be a taste of what that route will look like – although it won’t be exactly the same.

It will be the first races back for Tadej Pogačar after the Tour de France, as he prepares for this year’s World Championships in Zurich. He’s unlikely to win in Québec, where faster finishers like defending champion Arnaud De Lie, Tour de France green jersey Biniam Girmay and versatile sprinter Michael Matthews will fancy their chances, but he previously won Montréal in 2022, so he’s absolutely the favourite for that one. He’ll face competition from the likes of Matteo Jorgenson, Tiesj Benoot, Ben Healy, Julian Alaphilippe, Valentin Madouas, Neilson Powless, Toms Skujinš, Simon Yates and Romain Bardet.

GP Québec route

In Québec City, riders take on a 12.6km circuit with a couple of very short steep kickers and one longer (emphasis on the ‘er’, it’s only 1km), easier climb to the finish.

Over 16 laps the climbing adds up to a pretty whopping 2,976m, so expect attrition. And with the finish being the hardest part of the lap, it’s not for the pure sprinters, and there are plenty of opportunities to attack and get a gap, like Benoît Cosnefroy did in 2022.

GP Montréal route

The Montréal circuit is a proper Classic, it’s no surprise the Worlds are coming here. It’s almost exclusively up or down including the 1.8km Côte Camillien-Houde, which averages 8%, and over 17 laps of the 12.3km circuit the total climbing tallies up to just over 4,500m.

Again, the finish line is uphill, along the straight Avenue de Parc, which is a 650m, 4% average kick, so if there’s a group at the finish it’s a proper punchy climax. It’s hard to look past Pogačar here as usual, but on these circuits anything can happen.
