Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race 2024: Route, how to watch, start list and everything you need to know

The 2024 season is underway in Australia. The women’s Tour Down Under was won by Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance-Soudal) and the men’s by Stevie Williams (Israel-Premier Tech). Up next is the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, created in 2015 to mark legendary Aussie rider and Tour de France winner Cadel Evans’s final race as a professional cyclist.

It has been a fixture for both men and women in the WorldTour since 2017, and the road races are part of Geelong and the Surf Coast’s five-day festival of cycling that also includes the Geelong Classic Criterium and Surf Coast Classic for pro racers (but are not part of the WorldTour calendar). There are also casual and family rides for the wider public.

In 2024, the women will cover 143km on Saturday 27th January, and the men race 176km the following day, Sunday 28th January. Both cover similar routes from Geelong, near Melbourne, out towards Surf Coast and back north back towards Geelong again.

It’s here that the events differ. The women will cover two laps of a circuit featuring two ascents of Challambra Crescent (1.1km, 9%). The men will cover four laps and both races finish back where they started in Geelong.

Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race 2024: Women’s Route

Departing from Geelong, the women’s peloton will head south towards Bells Beach for the first 50km of racing, then north towards the first sprint point of the day at Torquay. There’s a chance of crosswinds towards Barwon Heads, Evans’s home base and location of the second sprint point.

The peloton heads inland from Ocean Grove back towards Geelong. From there, they ride onto a circuit approximately 17km in length, taking on two ascents of Challambra Crescent and finishing where they started.

Despite the loss of GCN+, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race will still be available to watch in the UK on Discovery+ for £6.99 per month with the basic package, which includes cycling and all other Eurosport programmes.

In Australia, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road will be shown live and for free on Seven and 7plus. You can listen to Phil Liggett, Robbie McEwan, Matthew Keenan and Kate Bates.

Elsewhere, coverage will be on FloSports in the United States and Canada; Eurosport/Discovery+ in Europe, Central America, Latin America and Asia-Pacific (excluding China and Japan), Pragosports in Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia, plus Sports5 in Israel.

If it’s not being shown in your country, you may be able to watch coverage using a VPN – Virtual Private Network – which allows users to mask their IP address and watch geo-blocked content, provided they don’t need to pay for a subscription. This is also helpful for watching paid-for coverage while travelling abroad in countries without access.

One such example is ExpressVPN, which is very well reviewed, helps users to find way to watch cycling without having to pay for broadcasters services, and costs £5.36 per month with three-months free.
