Tour de France 2025: Our sprinters form guide

While much of the talk ahead of the Tour de France will be on the favourites for GC, the sprinters also deserve some respect. About a third of the stages in this year’s race are expected to be fought out by the fastmen, with many of them piled into a flat first week through northern France.

The sprinters also have a prize of their own to fight for in the green jersey.. There’s an added incentive for the sprinters this year as well. Stage 1’s flat profile around Lille lends itself to a potential bunch sprint, so they are offered their first chance of a yellow jersey on day one in around five years.

Previous green jersey winners Biniam Girmay, Jasper Philipsen and Wout van Aert will return to the Tour de France this summer, with hopes of adding another green-ish jersey to their collection. Bolstering the startlist will also be previous Tour stage winners Tim Merlier, Dylan Groenewegen and Tour debutant Jonathan Milan.

We’ve saved you some time trawling through the startlist and found the top 13 sprinters coming to the 2025 Tour de France. We’ll go through each rider’s record for the year, distilling their form down into a horse race-style guide, including their win rate, average stage wins per race and season sprint results.

Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek)

A.S.O./Tony Esnault

Towering in figure at 1.93m, Jonathan Milan is one powerful sprinter. The Italian, who has won two points classification trophies at the Giro, will be starting in his first Tour de France as one of the most marked sprinters in the pack. That’s for good reason, given that he hasn’t left a stage race without a win since August 2023. This includes high-profile performances like at last year’s Giro against Merlier and the UAE Tour earlier this year when up against a strong sprint contingent. Additionally, the Lidl-Trek rider will be piloted by an exceptional lead-out train, with whom he’s had the time to practice throughout the calendar. Mixing all this together, it’s no surprise that he has one of the highest hit rates in the bunch.

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck)

Baloise Belgium Tour

A former green jersey winner and a nine-time Tour stage winner, Jasper Philipsen is one of the most recognisable names in recent Tour de France history. This season, however, things haven’t been quite so rosy for the Belgian, known for his frisky sprinting style. He’s only been able to pick up two wins in 2025, both on home soil and neither at the WorldTour level. Instead, the Alpecin-Deceuninck sprinter has often found himself outplayed by the likes of Merlier and Milan at higher prestige races, like the UAE Tour, Scheldeprijs and Gent-Wevelgem. Despite this recent run of form, Philipsen hasn’t left a Tour de France without a stage win since 2021.

Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep)

Baloise Belgium Tour

After spending four years out of the Tour cycle, Tim Merlier is back, now with the ever-present sprinting force of Soudal-QuickStep. Despite missing out on stage wins over the past two years in bunch sprints at Tour, the squad’s Belgian sprinter has the best sprinting record on paper this year, having scored the largest victory haul of 2025, with a tally of ten. These weren’t Mickey Mouse races either. Merlier has defeated Milan and Philipsen on several occasions this season, stretching from the trio’s clash at the UAE Tour to Merlier’s recent run-ins with Philipsen at the Baloise Belgium Tour. On a stats front, he’s the man to beat at the moment.

Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco-AlUla)

Sportida

Dutch sprinter Dylan Groenewegen has been a consistent force at the Tour de France. He’s racked up a total of six stage wins throughout his career, all in the first week of racing, having left five of his seven Tours with a stage victory under his belt. This year, his results have been more impressive at second-tier races than the WorldTour. He’s claimed three wins this season, with two at the Tour of Slovenia and one at the Tour de Hongrie. However, he’s not taken a WorldTour victory so far in 2025, with a seventh-place finish his best result in a top-division sprint. This didn’t stop him from claiming a stage at last year’s edition, when he faced a similarly disappointing run-up to the French race.

Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty)

A.S.O./Gaëtan Flamme

Winner of last year’s green jersey, Biniam Girmay was exceptional at the 2024 Tour de France. The Eritrean surpassed expectations to win three stages as well as the points classification. This year, however, Girmay has failed to pick up a single stage win. In fact, he hasn’t even cracked the top five at a WorldTour-level sprint. With a weak leadout train and a poor run of form, it’s unlikely that we’ll see another green July for the trailblazing Intermarché rider.

Nine-time Tour stage winner Wout van Aert doesn’t require much of an introduction. Although he’s won a handful of bunch finishes at the Grand Boucle before, it’s hard to judge his sprinting form this year because – quite simply – he hasn’t been sprinting too much. In stage races, he’s been working for Olav Kooij, while in the Classics, he’s often in reduced groups. With this, it’s hard to tell how the Belgian will fare at the Tour de France this year, at least in a sprinting domain.

Arnaud De Lie (Lotto)

Patrik Lundin/Cyclist

Lotto’s Arnaud De Lie has taken some heavy hits this year, both psychologically and physically. There’s been some harsh criticism launched at the Belgian, who’s been blighted with his weakest set of results since turning pro in 2023. Perhaps this is in part to his lack of Spring Classics results and a solitary stage win on his 2025 palmares, which only came when most of his opponents abandoned the Étoile de Bessèges due to safety concerns. His recent results at the Tour de Suisse were hardly convincing either, so it may take quite something to propel the young Wallonian to stage victory this July.

Danny van Poppel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe)

Without Sam Welsford or Jordi Meeus on the startlist, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe look to be going all-in for Danny van Poppel in the sprints. This year, he’s enjoyed some fruitful results, even if his sprint relations and irregular lines have caught more headlines. During the Tour de Hongrie, he picked up a pair of stage victories while he was on lead-out duties for the aforementioned Welsford. The Dutchman is quite crafty when it comes to positioning, and with six Tour appearances under his belt, he’s likely to be a feature inside the top ten on the Tour’s flatter stages. However, with GC ambitions taking precedent at the team, he’ll likely have to do a lot of the work himself.

Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious)

A.S.O./Charly Lopez

During his two previous Tour participations, Phil Bauhaus has come remarkably close to victory, with runners-up spots in bunch sprints at both. He usually thrives in a chaotic sprint, so Bauhaus may spring a surprise if things get hectic in the final kilometres. Having said that, it would be a surprise for Bauhaus to even win a stage altogether at this year’s Tour. The Bahrain Victorious rider has suffered a blight of poor results since coming back to racing after the Spring Classics. On the other hand, a recent top ten at the Copenhagen Sprint may offer some hope for the German.

Fernando Gaviria (Movistar)

Sprint Cycling Agency/UAE Tour

Quite surprisingly, Fernando Gaviria has only participated in two Tours de France. On his first attempt, he claimed the opening stage and a further sprint finish in the opening week, putting in motion an impressive Tour debut. Since then, however, the Colombian has faded, even to the point where he doesn’t have a single stage win to his name so far in 2025. Riding for Movistar, a team that’s historically struggled on the flat, Gaviria has a meagre handful of top ten finishes this year. That said, he looked in better shape at the recent Baloise Belgium Tour, and he often bounces back in time for Grand Tours.

Søren Wærenskjold (Uno X Mobility)

Luc Claessen/Getty Images

Now that Alexander Kristoff has been sidelined for the 2025 Tour de France, Norwegian sprinter Søren Wærenskjold will be Uno X’s sprinter of choice. The Omloop Het Nieuwsblad champion was on exceptional form at the beginning of the year, adding a stage victory at the Étoile de Bessèges to his maiden WorldTour win later that month. Since then, he’s managed to pick up some steam once more, with top tens at the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Copenhagen Sprint. The Norwegian prefers a messy sprint, so he may thrive during the race’s hectic opening couple of days in northern France. That said, Uno X are still yet to win their first Grand Tour stage, so it’s hard to believe that this drought will be broken during the highly competitive bunch sprints at the Tour.

Jake Stewart (Israel-Premier Tech)

Patrik Lundin/Cyclist

Perhaps to some viewers’ shock, Jake Stewart has been one of the most consistent sprinters of 2025. He’s claimed a rare WorldTour victory at the recent Dauphiné, putting the cherry on top of a first half of the season that was often spent towards the pointy end of bunch sprints. Israel-Premier Tech have two cards to play in Ackermann and Stewart, but in all honesty, it would be daft to work for anyone but the Englishman – especially with his new bike.

Tobias Lund Andresen (Picnic-PostNL)

Dario Belingheri/Getty Images

After Fabio Jakobsen’s enforced hiatus from the peloton due to cardiovascular complications, Danish sprinter Tobias Lund Andresen will pilot Picnic-PostNL at the Tour de France. The youngster has shone bright in the past at second-division races, with stage victories at the Cro Race, Tour of Turkey and the Tour of Denmark. He’s continued to improve this year, but with just one victory in a remarkable 43 race days, there’s little evidence to suggest that Andresen will bring home the bacon in France.
