Canyon’s new Grizl:On e-gravel bike is actually an e-do everything bike

Canyon has released the Grizl:On, a carbon electric gravel bike that replaces the previous Grail:On in its range. With the standard Grail being transformed into a gravel-race bike, the German behemoth has renamed and rejigged its e-gravel offering to slot in more neatly with the new-look range.

The Grizl:On is a gravel bike, but Canyon is emphasising its versatility as a potential n=1 e-bike that can be ridden on the commute, on the road and on trails, with the four models in the range upping in off-road spec – the top tier CF Trail is equipped with a dropper post and they all come with front suspension.

To meet the demands of all of these riders, the Grizl:On has plenty of bolts, capacity for mudguards and a pannier rack at the rear and built-in lights.

It has also been given an upgraded Bosch motor, changing from the Performance Line CX to the lighter Performance Line SX, which Canyon says also have a more natural assist than the multiple G-force level power the CX provided.

Prices for the Canyon Grizl:On start from £4,799 for the CF 7 and weights range from 15.3kg for the CF 9 to 17.6kg for the CF Daily.

A full review of the Grizl:On CF9 will be coming to cyclingelectric.com later today.

It’s out with the controversial double-decker handlebars and in with controversial front suspension, with a RockShox Rudy fork on every model in the four-tire range, which provides 40mm of travel to either dampen bumpy roads or soak in drops up to 20cm. Canyon says that while it acknowledges the debate around suspension on non-electric gravel bikes, ‘this little suspension fork is key to what makes the Grizl:On rip’.

One of the smartest features of the Grizl:On is the built-in lights, which turn on automatically when the bike is switched on. The front Lupine Nano SL light is attached onto the lower two bolts on the stem faceplate to seat neatly in front of the head tube and underneath the computer mount, which is attached through a hole in the centre of the faceplate. It has a button that can be attached onto the bars to turn it off and on if need be.

The rear Lupine C14 light is built in to the rear dropout with internal cable routing and aluminium housing, which can be removed easily if servicing is required. The lights are powered by the battery but Canyon says they’ll last two hours after the motor runs out.

The Grizl:On is powered by a Bosch Performance Line SX system, which takes over from the bulkier CX model on the Grail:On and is claimed to weigh in a shade over 4kg for motor and battery. The SX also has a lighter assist than the CX, making it feel more like an assist than a push, with its max output coming at higher cadences. Canyon says it has been able to ride over 100km in one charge when used the right way, but it also offers an optional extra PowerMore 250 Range Extender that is easy to attach beneath the front bottle cage and lifts battery capacity from 400Wh to 650Wh.

While the top-spec CF 7 has a RockShox Reverb AXS XPLR dropper post with 75mm of drop for real off-road potential, the other three models have Canyon’s S14 VCLS 2.0 carbon seatpost, which makes use of a leaf spring to offer enhanced flex for taking in rough surfaces.

The Grizl:On neatly fits Canyon’s Fidlock Quickloader frame bag like the latest Grail, has capacity to fit mudguards both front and rear – Canyon says it’s the first full-coverage mudguard built for the suspension fork – and a rear rack, which comes with the CF Daily model but can be fitted on any Grizl:On with up to 45mm tyres. Canyon says the bike can take a total system weight of 130kg.

The bike also has Bosch’s ConnectModule built in, which, alongside the Flow app, can trigger a two-stage alarm and location tracking in case it’s stolen.

Canyon Grizl:On geometry

The Grizl:On is built with a slack 69.5° head tube angle to keep things stable when hurtling down MTB trails, which is paired with a short 60mm stem to keep it capable enough to corner quickly. It’s made to be comfortable on long days in the saddle, so it has a reasonably high stack and a 74° seat tube angle that keep the rider fairly upright. The handlebar drops are also flared 16° to add comfort and control when descending.

Canyon Grizl:On models and spec

Currently only the CF 7 and CF 9 are available in the US and come with a bigger front chainring and the US-spec Bosch motor to meet the 45kmh allowances.
