The best photos from the UCI World Championships men’s road race 2024
The men’s road race brought an end to the 2024 UCI Road World Championships over in Zürich, Switzerland on Sunday. The race for the men’s elite rainbow jersey was closely fought with Tadej Pogačar, Mathieu van der Poel and Remco Evenepoel starting as favourites for the coveted prize.
After attacking with a staggering 100km to go, Tadej Pogačar took the honours and a career-first rainbow jersey. In doing so, the Slovenian rounds out a successful Triple Crown attempt after winning the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France earlier this year.
This morning in French newspaper L’Équipe, Eddy Merckx even admitted that Pogačar is above him’. The Slovenian disclosed after the race that it was ‘a silly move’, but it all paid off in the end.
Photographer Xavier Pereyron was on the scene to capture the action, memorialising just the third Triple Crown in men’s cycling history.

He means business.

I believe Gen Z describe this as ‘aura’.

…Küng, Küng, Stefan Küng, Küng, Stefan, Stefan Küng, Küng…

Brits abroad.

‘Tim, when’s Remco going to attack?’

Let the games begin…

Understandably, Evenepoel was a marked man in Zürich. He was looking to seal an unprecedented ‘double-double’ after his Olympic exploits in August.

This is definitely Switzerland.

Domen Novak sets the tone in the Slovenia-led peloton.

The weather was much better than for the women, who had to fight against driving rain the day prior.

At the 100km to go marker, Tadej Pogačar was already off the front. He soon caught the escape group and attacked with French trade teammate Pavel Sivakov.

Behind, the chase was on. Mathieu van der Poel was among the riders holding back.

After working with Sivakov initially, Pogačar set off on his own with 52km remaining in the race.

‘Let me check what Twitter’s saying about this Pogačar attack’.

The crowds help to ooze out a couple of extra watts over the climb.

The dictionary definition of strength on the bike.

The gap to the lone leader Pogačar ebbed and flowed during the final lap.

Behind, the race was fracturing over the steep kickers.

Tufts out, Pogačar continued his charge for the Worlds title and the rainbow jersey.

The gold might have weighed Remco down.

Toms Skujiņš and Ben Healy chased, but their efforts were soon brought back by the main group of favourites. They’d end up battling it out for the remaining medals.

The money shot. The Triple Crown is in the bag.

Rock on, Tadej.

A well-deserved cooldown.

The stars aligned for Pogačar in 2024, well and truly.

Between these two, they have won two world titles and twelve Monuments. Sorry Wout, but these guys are the best one-day racers around.

I think we’re going to get very familiar with rainbow Tadej.
