Colnago celebrates its 70th anniversary with a modern steel bike

Colnago has announced a special edition steel bike to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the brand’s founding. The bike, named the Steelnovo, has a Columbus steel frame with 3D printed steel lugs and hidden welds and it’s kitted out with a range of top-tier Italian components.

The Colnago Steelnovo is priced at €17,500 and only 70 will be made.

Colnago says it takes a full day to produce each Steelnovo bike, which pairs Columbus tubing and Campagnolo components – a classic pairing from Colnago bikes of the past.

Columbus has supplied a custom-shaped tubeset, which is welded to 3D printed lugs, made by Italian 3D printing company Additiva. The design of the tubing and lugs means that there’s no step between the lugs and the frame tubes.

Other custom features include a 3D printed head tube logo and a custom steerer tube top cap. There are Colnago logos on the thru-axles and the bar end plugs, both of which are made by Italian lightweight component specialist Carbon-Ti.

Despite the traditional material, the frame has a range of modern features, including integrated cable routing from the Colnago carbon bars, a seatpost clamp integrated into the seatstays and a UDH rear dropout.

Other modern features include clearance for 35mm tyres, a tapered carbon fork with CeramicSpeed SLT maintenance-free bearings and a T47 bottom bracket, while Colnago says that the geometry will suit both endurance riders and those looking for a more racy position.

The Campagnolo Super Record Wireless groupset and Bora Ultra WTO wheelset are both special editions for the Steelnovo, with the groupset and wheels bearing the Italian tricolore as well as gold Campagnolo and Colnago logos. The groupset means that the Steelnovo is disc brake only, despite Colnago’s recent dalliance with rim brakes on the C68 Road.

In fact, Colnago boasts that all the frame parts and components are from Italian brands, right down to the Pirelli tyres, although a Brooks saddle looks to have sneaked in.
